Removing such statements reminds me of Brave New World, 1984, and Animal Farm. Both the Soviet Union and Communist China removed historical statements from the public record. Photographs were doctored to remove public figures now in disgrace. A California jury, called randomly, found the WT liable. The WTBTS had notice of the pedophile's activities and did not warn members of the increased risk. The two-witness rule means strong, corroborating evidence, evidence admissible in court and used by law enforcement authorities, could not be heard. The Witness culture does not want to bring reproach on Jehovah. People are consistently encouraged not to go to law enforcement. More and more states are enacting laws that leave the Witnesses no choice but to report such acts to law enforcement. It is not hard to call 911 or go to your local police department. Most churches have express policies to comply with the law. Besides, JWs enjoy no confessional privilege. They mock the rite of confession.

Bart Ehrman's Favorite Bible Film--made in Canada
by humbled ini heard an interview with him once when he was asked did he have a favorite bible-themed film.
he said yes-- jesus of montreal.. "when attendence at a church's annual passion play flags, a troupe of young actors is hired to stage a newer interpretation of the teachings of jesus.
while their newer, more modern version brings the house down, it also brings down the condemnation of church hierarchy, creating a strange parallel between the actors--now persecuted believers--and the authorities.

Jesus of Montreal is a poor choice, in my opinion. There are so many other choices. I suppose there is no accounting for taste. It would be nice if people here read someone besides Ehrman. My favorites are Scorcese's Last Temptation of Christ, the Italian version of St. Matthew's gospel. I also watch Franco Zefferelli's Jesus of Nazareth every Easter for the all-star cast. If you remove Mel Gibson from his The Passion of Christ, it is an excellent film.

Band on the Run
Well, forty years after graduating college and thirty-eight since law school graduation, I am still waiting for Jehovah to start Armageddon and end this present system of things. It is good I did not hold my breath. Fear existed but it lessens over time. My parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents waited obediently for the end of this present system of things. I can't help but note the massive construction by Jehovah's Witnesses of their upstate compounds. Jesus did not say to build such structures. Paul did not build compounds in his ministry which was very different than the Witness ministry. Nor did Jesus, Paul, or the Twelve invest in real estate and the stock exchanges.
Decent education teaches critical thinking skills which would end the WT reign of overreaching, control, and crazy doctrine. Educated people are able to place a WT quote of a theologian in a Google search and discover that a convicted and executed Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal Nazi is quoted favorably by the WT. Educated women can read the story of a domestic violence victim and leave the WT organization. Unlike the Roman Catholic Church, educated people are persecuted. Assignments will disappear. The WT is not responsive to a cut off of contributions. Discussion is not permitted. There is no way to go but out - even at the cost of loss of family and friends.
Education, not necessarily college, is essential in today's society. Most other religions realize this fact. They set up our first universities. Monasteries and convents kept Western civilization alive during dark times. Such religions educate their youth in Sunday Schools and youth programs. Playgrounds and gyms are built. Recreational activities are encouraged. There will be no jobs for JWs in the future.

oI teralways did public work after billing the required hours. Many lawyers at large firms do public interest work for free in addition to their paid work. The large firms encourage this work. Not everyone in the profession is a money grubber. I saw lawyers staying late., working on death penalty cases, public policy, general civil rights and liberties work, environmental litigation, and serving on non-profit boards. Every election cycle lawyers voluntarily show up at polling places to ensure voting integrity. Other professions are welcome. All for free. I did hundreds, if not thousands of hours for free The quality of work is superb. Your lawyers doing corporate work also tend to do public interest work. The reservoir of guilt among the privileged is great. Large firms tend to encourage the work. There is job satisfaction. Lawyers learn skills. Also, smaller firms do not have the capacity to bring these cases.
If you divide hours worked by salary and include free public interest work, the hourly rate is diminished. I am tired of the profession being portrayed as a bunch of ambulance chasing money grabbers. When others were partying, I was in a library or my office working. The hours are long. Certain responsibilities exist. The profession is being transformed by economic forces. My nephew is attending a bad law school. He is spending three years and will probably never have a legal job. I would rather do retail sales than be a personal injury lawyer.
I realize that most ordinary people here do not mix with the top of the profession. When I consult lawyers for personal matters, I see a wide range of competence. There are many lawyers doing routine, every day law that have great skills and integrity. Corporations bottom line is profit. Lawyers are entitled to profit.

The WT lost at the trial level. There is an appellate process. Facts will likely not be revisited. The highest court in Ca has not heard the Conti case. The Wt has not lost - not all. Not yet.

They will only get money. Today's new is tomorrow's forgotten stories. A man in his forties had abundant opportunities to come forward as an adult. Proof burdens remain. Evidence is old. People's recollections suffer. These cases need to be pursued when evidence is fresh. If you come forward in your forties, money is probably a factor.

The Witnesses are NOT mainstream. It can be argued strongly that they are not even Christian b/c of the small, insignificant role Jesus plays in their theology/doctrines. Anyone could see that they should have used TV and other media long ago. The Christian broadcasters, such as Oral Roberts, Pat Robertson, Joel Osteen, and Joyce Meyers draw millions, hundreds of millions from uninformed Christian. Their doctrines are not sound. Knocking on doors disturbs people's privacy expectations. Knocking on a door meant one thing in the 1920s and quite another now. I believe political campaigns should constrain their door to door activities. We live in an age of snooping and intrusion on a grand scale. If you notice the plethora of campaign commercials on TV and the Internet, paired with radio penetration, political campaigns see the message.
Is this TV aimed at retaining Witnesses or attracting newcomers? I will not be watching it just as I do not watch Fox News or the Christian Broadcast stations. Perhaps the zealots could watch TV rather than traipsing to KH. Has Andre made his appearance on JW TV? I might tune in for a few seconds to glimpse Andre, the man most traveled.

NOT on JW.ORG: A.P. and International Press break stories about rampant child abuse by Jehovah's Witnesses MINISTERS and Watchtower Bible and Tract Society Cover-ups.

san diego (ap) the jehovah's witnesses were ordered to pay $13.5 million to a southern california man who said he was molested as a child by a church member.. a san diego judge ruled wednesday that the church's governing body covered up years of sexual abuse by a member who later became an elder.. superior judge joan lewis said actions of the watchtower bible and tract society of new york were "reprehensible and reckless," u-t san diego reported friday (http://bit.ly/1uf519r ).. jose lopez, who was awarded the money, sued the group, alleging that he was molested in 1986 at age 7 by a member of the spanish congregation in the linda vista area of san diego.. lopez said the elders suggested gonzalo campos as his bible teacher even though they knew he had molested at least one other boy, the suit contended.

In order to fairly describe the word "rampant," one must compare the meritorious claims against other religious bodies to understand if the Witnesses have rampant child sexual abuse. I suspect they may be in a higher incident category b/c of the deference to brothers and the lack of sophistication of members. Other religions also share these traits. Merely filing a law suit complaint is not an indicator of the underlying merits. One would need to check settlement patterns and actual awards after full trials. The two witness rule should find New Light.
Rather than announcing "rampant" abuse here, why don't you see if your state has a mandatory clergy reporting law? If not, get in touch with legislators and demand it. Meet with local prosecutors and women's groups to monitor its enforcement. Tell the locals about theocratic warfare. Is the WT abuse rampant? There is no evidence for it. It may be. Casting the situation as rampant is untoward.

How would you know what lawyers are trained to look for? I expect that the WT lawyers, and the case may have been assigned to outside counsel, are devout Jehovah's Witnesses. Simons of Conti fame said the WT lawyers were polite and professional. If you have the WT mindset, you don't drop troublesome clients. A better long range legal plan for the WT would be to promptly report sexual abuse allegations to the police. Detach WT Legal from the process b/c it has potential liability. Let the police do their jobs b/c they have the expertise.

Truly moderate Muslims exist and thrive! This forum has been racist of late. Disparaging a major world religion is not good. There is so much in our own tradition that is deplorable --the sacrifice of Isaac, the flood story, the rape of women, major war crimes by Israel. The list of questionable items could go and on. One can view these Biblical sources as a tradition. The Bible also teaches respect for parents, to love each other, not to steal, etc. I suggest you investigate Islam, not rely on some crazy posts here. I know American Muslims. They are no threat to me or anyone else. I am tired of my personal beliefs being defined by Christian fundamentalism rather than what I actually believe. I suggest Muslims are similarly upset.
